Posted

Over 3,000 books will be offered at The Lewis E. (Rusty) Childress, Jr. special book sale honoring Rusty, who left a collection estimated to contain 100,000 books.

The six-day sale is Oct. 7-12 in the Seymour Library Community Room. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, which is half-price day.

At one point in Rusty's life he told his cousin Gary Childress, "I'm so happy." Gary asked him, "Why are you so happy?" He said, "I now own more books than I can possibly read in my lifetime!" Rusty lived, yes lived to read.

Rusty was a 1969 Marshfield High School graduate. He attended college at Mizzou and SMS, now Missouri State University. His dad was the former Probate-Magistrate Judge Lewis E. Childress in Marshfield.

Rusty's niece Andrea Hopper, is a Marshfield Junior High School English teacher. His brother, Robert Childress, was a graduate of Marshfield and was an attorney in Marshfield for several years.

Book subjects range from Vintage First Editions (some signed), Large Coffee Table, Inspirational, Children, Fiction, Nonfiction, Cookbooks, Gardening, Religious, War & Military, History, Art, Sports, Medical, Missouri/Ozarks, Animals, Birds, Trains, Planes, 60's-70's Auto Repair, Motorcycle, Home Schooling, Guns, Woodworking, Cabinetry, How to Build Houses, Outdoor Sheds, and much more.

The vast majority of books are priced at $1. Vintage books, First Edition, Coffee Table books are priced at $3-10. Volume sets are slightly more, but priced to sell quickly.

For example, a 20-volume pristine set of Compilations of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents (1897-1922) is priced to sell for $100, or $50 on half price day.

Book dealers, collectors, and book lovers will enjoy this sale and find it interesting. Due to space limitations, additional books will be added each day.

Rusty's son, Nathan Childress of Houston, TX, inherited the book collection. In addition to the 3,000 books donated to the Friends, books were donated to the Webster County Library in Marshfield and Seymour Library for patrons to read.

Rusty's remains are interred at the 1860 Childress Pioneer Family Cemetery on the Robert Lucas Childress farm, which was in the family for four generations.
