Singer awarded as "extraordinary" Route 66 businesswoman

Posted

Carol Singer, former reading specialist turned business owner, has been honored as a "Route 66 Extraordinary Woman" by the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership's Route 66 Extraordinary Women Initiative.

The award came with a cash award as a part of the initiative's micro-grant program. Carol was awarded the grant for her contributions to Route 66 as a woman owned/operated business.

Singer’s journey from the classroom to the auto parts industry is one of resilience and determination.

Before entering the world of business, Carol spent her career helping children who struggled to read, working as a reading specialist until her retirement. After caring for her husband Vernon, who passed away from cancer, she found herself stepping into a new role—overseeing the family’s auto parts business, Singer Auto Parts, which has been a staple on Route 66 for nearly 60 years.

Vernon and his father originally founded the business, each borrowing an equal amount to start it. Vernon later bought out his father’s share, and Singer Auto Parts became a long-standing local institution, known for its reliable service to the community. When Vernon fell ill, Carol, who had been enjoying her retirement, took on the challenge of learning the ropes of the business.

After Vernon’s passing, Carol quickly transitioned into managing the business full-time. Despite having no prior experience in the industry, she persevered, keeping the doors open and serving customers with the same dedication Vernon had for decades.

Now, several years into running the business, Carol remains active, committed, and beloved by her customers. Though she’s strong and energetic, her friends and loved ones wish she could have more time to travel and enjoy her retirement. However, Carol has found a new passion in the business and the people she serves.

As Route 66 plans for its upcoming 100th anniversary celebration, Carol’s award highlights her exceptional contribution to the iconic roadway’s rich history and the continued legacy of the Singer family business. The Marshfield Mail will have more on the celebration as it becomes available.
