Seymour shooting suspect remains in jail after first court appearance

Posted

Arthur Medley, of Seymour, is being held in the Webster County Jail without bond after his arrest Friday for first-degree assault and armed criminal action in the shooting on Cardwell Chapel Road in Seymour.

“Right now it appears that there had been an ongoing disagreement between the alleged shooter and the victim,” said Webster County Sheriff Roye Cole.

“It is still under investigation but in my examination of the facts there was no threat to the shooter whatsoever. There were no other weapons involved, no other threats of violence and it’s not believed that the victim could have charged the suspect, because there was a barrier between them.”

According to the initial reports from the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, the alleged shooter communicated with his daughter and her boyfriend on Friday, March 17, that he wanted to speak with her alone. When both parties arrived at the address on Cardwell Chapel Road around 11:30 a.m., the alleged shooter and the boyfriend were mouthing at one another, back and forth before Medley shot him in the face, from what was described as a fairly long distance for a pistol. The initial investigation revealed that the suspect then approached the victim and attempted to shoot a second time, however, the girlfriend shielded the victim.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper, Webster County Deputy, and Seymour Police Officer arrived on scene and rendered first aid to the victim until EMS arrived, where he was then transported by ambulance and is currently in stable condition at a Springfield hospital.

According to Cole, this case is still under investigation. Medley was charged with the two felonies and had his first appearance in front of Judge Justin Evans Tuesday, where it was determined Medley would remain in jail without bond. His next court date is set for Tuesday, April 11 at 10 a.m. The Marshfield Mail will have further updates as they become available.
