Pasture weeds and livestock fly control workshop coming to Marshfield

Posted

The University of Missouri Extension is hosting a pasture weeds and livestock fly control workshop on Wednesday, March 29 at the Webster County Extension Center in Marshfield. Registration will begin at 2 p.m. with cobbler and ice cream presentations to follow.

“After the drought last summer, about the only thing that's going to survive the draft was wheat and so this is just a timely workshop as far as when things began to grow. Hopefully, now that the drought is over, we're going to get some forage that we can use,” said Engagement Specialist Kyle Whittaker. “But right along with that we normally get some weeds that we need to consider maybe controlling. Catching those weeds in the early days of growth, where they can be controlled will improve your pasture for the growing season.”

With the drought of 2022, forage stands in pastures and hay fields may be thinned, allowing for increased weed germination which could cause problems for farmers and ranchers. Sarah Kenyon, PhD, will present about weed identification and control. Dr. Kenyon will also discuss toxic weeds that farmers should be aware of, the effects on livestock, and how to control them.

Southern Missouri is seeing warmer than usual temperatures suggesting that spring may be here. Fly species that cause significant reductions in livestock weight gain and increase herd health problems like pink eye are starting to be seen with the warmer temperatures. Elizabeth Picking, Livestock Specialist, will discuss fly species, the potential damage if not controlled, and how to control fly populations.

This program is free to attend but pre-registration is required, as seating is limited. Pre-register or get more information by contacting the Webster County Extension Center at 417-859-2044.

The Extension Center also offers a number of clubs for the Webster County area, including a National Women's Homesteading Group which meets once a month, as well as a beekeeping club. For more information, search University of Missouri Extension Webster County on Facebook.
