No limb drop-off location in Marshfield

Posted

With spring warming up, the Ellis O. Jackson Park has become a much more frequent location for outdoor gatherings… and a dumping site for limbs. However, that’s not what it’s meant for.

“We have allowed people to dump grass clippings and leaves in the gully in the park,  we’re fast approaching a time when that’s not going to work,” explained Mayor Natalie McNish. “For now it’s allowed… Limbs are not.”

The City of Marshfield does not have any limb drop-off locations. The park is not only being misused as a drop-off for limbs but other items as well. When this happens, the city is left to dispose of the piles.

“We’ve had tvs, couches, car parts and more dumped there and then we have to deal with it,” she said. “The city has to find time and staff to clean everything up and dispose of it ourselves. That’s not what the park is for… It is a difficult challenge for the city to maintain the property the way the citizens want it to be maintained when its being used improperly.””

In the past, there have been designated limb pick-up days where city employees would pick up the limbs off residential curbs. According to McNish, last year the city could not do pick-ups because they relied on an inmate labor program which was discontinued due to COVID.
