New Year? New Outlook

Posted

As the new year starts, many people will set impossible goals for themselves, while some will put little effort in. What is the point? We have all year the phrase new year, new you and most of us have rolled our eyes. It's just another year. And honestly, it is easy to dwell on the negative things that happened last year and the past. From politics to celebrities, plagues to prices, it's hard to think there is any light at the end of this deep dark tunnel that we call life.

Though it does not have to be this way, there is light at the end. In short, my personal beliefs can be summarized in two phrases, Dum spiro Spero and Float On.

Dum Spiro Spero is Latin for 'While I breathe, I hope.' While the phrase Float On is the title of my all-time favorite tracks by the alternative rock band Modest Mouse. I recommend checking out the song or looking at the lyrics for yourself. It is very inspirational.

With everything going on, it feels like there is no point in really doing much. Why set goals when it does not matter in the end? While this mindset is accurate from the whole world's point of view. I would make the argument first to stop looking from up high and look at yourself. Setting those goals for yourself still matters because you are still here. Another year has passed, and you have endured.

So why not set a goal to better yourself? Just remember, the key is moderation. Do you want to lose weight? You can start by walking around the block or a local park once a week. Would you like to learn a new skill? There are many websites and videos like Skillshare or Youtube that you can watch or learn at your own pace.

I may be coming across as a bit scattered, but I encourage you to take one step, just one, out of your comfort zone. Then, who knows, you might like the new person you have become.

Thank you for reading, and have a great rest of your shift.
