MJHS makes global finals

Posted

The 7th and 8th grade Marshfield Gifted Education students have returned from our amazing trip to Destination Imagination Global Finals in Kansas City, MO.

“We left on May 20 and returned on May 23,” said Angela Hoefer, Marshfield R-1 Gifted Education teacher. “It seemed like a long time to be gone, but we actually had a jam packed agenda and didn't have nearly enough time to do everything that we wanted to do.”

The highlights were the opening ceremony on Saturday, the 8th graders, The Contwistadors, performance on Sunday, participating in pin trading, the KC Quest Challenge and attending the Box n Ballers Bash on Monday, and the 7th graders, The Thunder Jays, performance and the awards ceremony on Tuesday.

“We came back exhausted and full of memories and stories,” she added.

Overall, the 8th graders placed 35 out of 37. There were 47 teams in their category and age level.

The 7th graders tied for 25 place out of 30. There were 40 teams in their category and age level.

“While these are not impressive statistics, we were extremely proud to just have made it to Global Finals and we learned a lot from the experience,” Hoefer said.

The entire competition hosted about 500 teams from 12 different countries. According to Hoefer, students met other attendees from Korea, Beijing, Mexico, Texas, California, New York, Illinois, South Dakota, Minnesota, and so many more places. There were even teams from Ukraine there.

“With the help from local businesses and community members, we were able to fundraise $13,000. Between the registration fees and travel/food/hotel expenses, we used every penny,” Hoefer said. “Thank you to everyone that helped and supported us along the way. We couldn't have done it without you.”
