Lady Jays earn Big 8 Conference Championship

Posted

The Marshfield Lady Jays are Big 8 Conference champions after Monday’s road win against the Nevada Tigers. Both teams entered the matchup with a record of 19-4 on the season.

“Our emphasis was to embrace the environment that we were going into. We knew it was going to be loud and we were on the road, but we knew, this is the championship game environment that we want,” said Head Coach Katie Pritchard. “The goal was to step into it with confidence and be the aggressors… our girls did that from the get go which allowed us to build a solid lead, which we needed. Everyone was playing with confidence and did their jobs.”

A hot 3-point streak by the Lady Jays in the first half gave them as much as a 21-point lead over the Tigers. The score was 45-24 as the Jays entered the final 10 minutes of the game.

“We knew we had to stick to what we are… and just be Marshfield. We talked about it, knew they were going to go on a run, how to respond and how to cut off that run as quick as we could,” Pritchard added. “They wanted it really bad. Coming into the season we wanted the conference win. We weren’t satisfied with a tie for the title last season and the passion these girls had showed on the floor.”

The Tigers scored 10 unanswered points in the third quarter and brought the game to within four-points in the final quarter. However, the Lady Jays answered each shot the Tigers scored and came out with the win, 61-56.

“I’m extremely proud of this team,” the coach smiled. “This was a full team win with effort on both ends and we’re looking forward to finishing out the season strong.”

The Lady Jays will face Mansfield Thursday, Feb. 16 at home for senior night, honoring the team’s sole senior, Riley Manary.
