JAG hauls hardware home from State

Posted

Marshfield High School JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) Program competed in the Missouri state contest at Capitol Plaza in Jefferson City March 24-25. The program took six students, competing in several categories and ultimately brought back a boat load of hardware.

“We took home some hardware now! What, what! These kids did awesome,” said JAG Advisor Shell Jones. “We ended up bringing home two first place wins. We were state champions in the essay contest and the prepared speaking, and both of those were Kaleah Burks. She was our state champion in two different categories.”

Ryleigh Cantrell, Andrew Henslee and Isabella Kilgore competed in Creative Decision Making and there were also two second place wins. Elizabeth Wall was runner-up in Financial Literacy and Marshfield’s Project Based Learning team won runner-up and they presented the Made in Marshfield Celebrity Dinner. The Project Based Learning Team was composed of Emery McCormick, Kaleah Burks and Elizabeth Wall.

“The Project Based Learning project was what our team won first in last year and went on to win second at Nationals in… so these kids had to come up with a new approach and present the project in a whole new way, showing what it was, how it affected our community, what it did for our JAG Program and so on,” Jones explained. “This year they came up with a different way of presenting it. They brought up mountain climbing because they felt like I dropped them off at the base of the mountain and said ‘Good luck!’, but you can’t climb a mountain by yourself and they explained each piece of prepping for that night and being able to reach the summit. They came up with it all by themselves and it was great.”

Students have to finish in the top three in the state to go to the National competition. However, they can only participate in one event. Kaleah Burks will be going to Nationals for Prepared Speaking and Elizabeth Wall, Emery McCormick and Ryleigh Cantrell will compete in Project Based Learning.

The National contest will be held in St. Louis this year and will run from April 17-21.
