Field of a thousand suns

Posted

Not far outside of town, down a paved and slightly windy road, you’ll find a field of big beautiful sunflowers. “I originally decided to plant a small area of them for my wedding (8 years ago) because I have always loved sunflowers and of course they were my wedding flower,” shared Lacey Cantrell owner of the sunflower field.

“Every other year we have planted them because it brings joy to our road and people love it,” explained Cantrell. The sunflower field, though on privately owned property, is open to the public every year. “We allow people to come and take photos free of charge…to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life.”

While it isn’t cheap to plant the sunflowers Cantrell insists that it’s worth it, “It does cost quite a bit just to plant and spray a half-acre, it is so worth it seeing people’s family photos and the community enjoying it so much.”

With rising costs of everything, this year the family did decide to put out a donation box, but not to cover the cost of planting as one might think. “…We decided to put a donation box out for our Church. These donations will go towards school supplies,” shared Cantrell.

If you would like to see the sunflower field for yourself you can find it located right outside of Marshfield. Take Highway W about three miles to Vineyard Road. “The (sunflowers) look their best early morning or of an evening because the heat makes them look tired during the day…we are located right outside of town…(the sunflowers) are on the left, you can’t miss them,” shared Cantrell.
