Headed to the Courts (Conway)

Basketball Preview

Posted

Winter Sports is fast approaching and with that comes perhaps one of the most anticipated Basketball. That said, we reached out to the coaches in the Webster County area and asked them about the upcoming season.

Speaking for the Conway Bears Boys' Basketball is Coach  Craig Campbell and Girls' Basketball is Coach  Matt Wilson.

What are your goals for the season?

Campbell: Our score average and eliminating our opponents on defense would be a massive thing for us to have success this year.

Wilson: I want the team to have a fun year, and I'm a big believer in what Basketball can teach you and give for life.

What are you looking forward to during the season?

Campbell: Many of our team played Junior Varsity last year and had a successful season. I'm excited to see how they transition to varsity this year.

Wilson: Well, it's my first year being a head coach, not just in Conway but anywhere, so I want the girls to enjoy Basketball.

What do you enjoy most about coaching?

Campbell: See the players' competitiveness and the years of hard work they put in. There are so many ways to play the game of Basketball, and teaching it in a way that the players and I enjoy is great.

Wilson: I love science and working with young people, so I love how much young people can adapt and change. We get set in our ways when we get older, but young people can take what you give them and grow, especially while playing Basketball. The other aspect is I'm a big relational person. I told my players, "I'm gonna care more about them than the game." Sure winning and giving your all matters, but I will try to be the person in their corner if they need me.

Who are some players to look out for, and why?

Campbell: Cade Archer and Issac Freeman are returning from last year and will take a much more significant role. But really, anyone from JV has a chance to put their name out there. They all play hard and play together as a team.

Wilson: Brie Thompson is one of the seniors and has been playing for all four years. She is a track star and is good at going up and down the floor. Gracie Vestal is another senior and an excellent defender. Then we have Quinncy Vestal, a sophomore and a talented shooter.

We, citizens of Webster County, look forward to what the season brings to these teams.
