City buys property to expand City Hall operations

Posted

The City of Marshfield has closed on a piece of property just larger than two acres off of A Highway in town, near City Hall. The site is the former location of Southtowne Grille, also formerly known as Sheila’s Place.

“We’ve been trying to figure out operations here at City Hall since the year started. The former board had great dreams of moving it to the square, but the citizens and the current board felt that wasn’t the right decision. We sold that building, took the money and held it back,” explained Mayor Natalie McNish. “We have great dreams of expanding this building, putting a new front on it, and making it more modern. But all of those bids came back much higher than the money we’ve saved and we’re not interested in any new debt. So we have pivoted again in our plan and bought the old Sheila’s Place.”

The City closed on the property on Monday, July 1 and within 30 days, they’ll take possession of it. The City plans to do some work on the building to remodel it into a meeting space, which could serve as the Parks Department by the end of the remodeling of both properties; the existing City Hall building and the building they just purchased.

“Again, we’re working off of the cash we have saved and nothing more,” she added. “So once that’s ready, we have a general contractor on board to help us renovate the City Hall structure. We’ll move everyone into the new building in the meantime, while everything is built and completed.”

In the end, City Hall operations will remain at the current location, with the Parks Department moving across to the new property, where the new meeting room can be used for programming exercise classes and other parks related activities.

The two acres will also house a storage building for City use. The Marshfield Mail will have more information and photos of construction progress as the project develops.
