The United States welcomed a new citizen among its ranks last month, and she happens to be from our very own county. Alena Akulich, originally from Belarus, and now of Niangua, took her Oath of Naturalization and Allegiance to the U.S. on June 15, 2022. While still living in Belarus, an Eastern European nation bordering Russia, Alena and her husband, Dennis, took part in the Diversity Immigrant Lottery system. This program randomly selects up to 50,000 hopeful immigrant applicants to get visas per year, all from countries with low immigration rates to the States. more
Some things seem to have always just been a fixture in our lives, either personally, in our community, or all the way up to the largest scale, globally. One thing that has probably always been there in most of our lives, is the idea of the county extension. Whether we actively participate in its programs, or maybe just kind of, sort of, know of it, it is an interesting facet of our government. And since it is paid for by our tax dollars, it is a topic worth deeply diving into to investigate its origins, and its role today, so that we can be keenly aware of the many, many things our government does with the money we provide to it. more
