Michelle Runyon accepts the 2018 Business of the Year Award from Jared Day, board director of the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce, for Grass Roots Garden Center and Custom Creations Landscaping.

The Marshfield area’s top business for 2018 is Grass Roots Garden Center and Custom Creations Landscaping.

Michelle Runyon of Grass Roots accepted the Business of the Year Award at Saturday’s annual meeting of the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

Custom Creations began in May of 2000, when Kevin Runyon started the company to help pay his way through college. He began by mowing grass locally, then eventually bought another mowing company and starting doing landscaping projects as well. Through the years his passion for landscaping and landscaping design grew, as well as the landscaping side of Custom Creations. Along with this, he also developed a dream to open a landscape center, so he could help homeowners landscape on their own.

This year Grass Roots Garden Center and Gifts opened on March 31. The two companies together employ eight people, including Kevin and his wife and co-owner Michelle.

The name Grass Roots literally came from Kevin’s start, or “roots,” of mowing grass.

In receiving the award, Michelle said, “It feels great to work for people you have known your whole life, as well as meeting and welcoming the new residents who hire us to work for them as well.” She added, “It also always feels good to do business with people in town who we have done business with, which is very common in our small town. Our sense of community is unmatched anywhere else in the country!”
